Kirinyaga Residents Vow to Block Miraa Trucks Over Rising Accidents on Mwea-Embu Highway

Residents of Mwea in Kirinyaga County are voicing their anger and frustration after the tragic loss of two children in an accident involving a Miraa vehicle.

The children were laid to rest on Tuesday in a somber and emotional ceremony, held at Kithogondo slums in Kirinyaga County.

The incident has reignited concerns over road safety and the behavior of Miraa transport drivers.

During the burial, speaker after speaker expressed outrage over a pattern of accidents linked to speeding Miraa vehicles.

Tebere MCA Peter Karinga vowed that the community would take action to prevent further loss of life.

โ€œWe will only permit miraa vehicles traveling at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour on this highway. No more lives will be lost to reckless driving,โ€ he stated firmly.

Mourners condemned the apparent negligence of traffic authorities, accusing them of failing to enforce speed limits and other road safety measures.

Peter Murungaru voiced his dismay, asking, โ€œWhere is the government of Kenya when these miraa vehicles blatantly violate traffic rules? They refuse to slow down or stop in busy towns like Ngurubani.โ€

The incident that claimed the lives of the two children occurred on November 27.

They were riding a bicycle in Kithogondo slums, Ngurubani town when they were hit by a miraa vehicle.

In response, enraged residents temporarily blocked the Mwea-Embu highway to protest the ongoing menace.

Community members are now demanding stricter enforcement of traffic laws to hold negligent drivers accountable.

Phillip Njogu pointed out that even after being chased off the Mwea-Embu highway, miraa vehicles continue to speed dangerously on alternative routes such as the Kutus-Kagio-Sagana road.

The two children were laid to rest in a shared grave at Kasarani Cemetery in Thiba Ward, leaving behind a grieving community determined to fight for safer roads.
