Archbishop Orders Return of President Ruto’s Ksh5M Church Donation Amid Corruption Concerns

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Archbishop, Jackson Ole Sapit, has ordered the Bungoma bishop to return a Ksh5 million donation from President William Ruto.

Sapit criticized the donation, facilitated by Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, as a move intended to embarrass the Anglican Church.

During a December 3 press conference, Sapit apologized for the incident and emphasized that the Anglican Church rejects donations with unclear origins.

He described the act as an unfortunate attempt to test the church’s stance, referencing a recent decision by the Catholic Church to reject political donations.

President Ruto’s Ksh5 million contribution to the Crispinus Anglican Church in Bungoma on December 1 has fueled controversy over political funding in religious institutions.

Governor Lusaka, who delivered the donation, defended the gesture, asserting that there was nothing wrong with leaders supporting church activities. He expressed hope that the money would not be returned.

At a National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) press briefing, Archbishop Sapit urged Kenyans to denounce corrupt politicians and reject donations from political leaders.

He alleged that much of the money given by politicians originates from stolen taxes and called for accountability.

Sapit implored citizens to stop glorifying leaders who provide financial contributions without transparency about the source of their funds.

The debate follows a recent rejection by the Catholic Church of a Ksh5 million donation from President Ruto to a Kayole church.

Catholic Bishop Philip Anyolo cited constitutional and church policy violations as reasons for declining the funds.
