Churches Urge Kenyans: Reject Gov’t Lies, Recall Lazy MPs
The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called on Kenyans to resist government propaganda and take active steps to demand accountability from their leaders.
In a statement co-signed by Chairman Rev. Dr. Elias Otieno Agola and General Secretary Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui, the NCCK expressed deep concern over the nation’s condition, likening Kenya’s current challenges to a critically ill patient in need of urgent intervention.
The council attributed Kenya’s problems to the public’s susceptibility to deceptive narratives promoted by political leaders focused on retaining or seizing power.
“Our current predicament stems from our collective habit of believing narratives crafted by individuals seeking to hold or gain political leadership. These stories are often rooted in falsehoods,” the statement read.
“We urge you, fellow Kenyans, to pursue truth. Don’t just accept what you hear—verify it to determine if it holds any truth.”
The NCCK also criticized Members of Parliament (MPs) for failing to fulfill their mandate, accusing them of betraying the electorate.
Instead of holding the Executive accountable, the council lamented that MPs have aligned themselves with oppressive policies, effectively abandoning their oversight role.
“Rather than standing with the people, MPs have become tools of the Executive, enforcing oppressive laws and policies. This situation is unsustainable,” the NCCK said.

The council encouraged voters to exercise their constitutional power to recall underperforming MPs, emphasizing that elected leaders serve at the discretion of the electorate.
“We urge voters to initiate recall processes for MPs who fail to meet your expectations. As voters, you are the employers of these leaders, and recalling them is a disciplinary action provided by the Constitution,” the NCCK stated.
Addressing delays in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the NCCK condemned the government’s inaction as a violation of the democratic process and a betrayal of the Kenyan people.
The council warned that attempts to undermine constitutional institutions threaten the very fabric of the nation’s democracy.
“The IEBC is central to Kenya’s democracy, responsible for managing elections and leadership transitions. The leadership’s refusal to reconstitute the commission is a grave insult to the people and a direct attack on our identity as a nation,” the statement emphasized.
The NCCK urged Kenyans to pressure their leaders and the Judiciary to expedite the IEBC reconstitution process, demanding accountability to protect Kenya’s democracy.
“Citizens must ensure that elected leaders and appointees prioritize this matter. Demand that the Judiciary concludes all cases related to the IEBC within two weeks. Let us reclaim our democracy,” the NCCK concluded.
