Gas Leak Chaos: Eight KCSE Students Collapse

A gas leak at Makande Girls Secondary School on Thursday morning caused eight KCSE candidates to faint, with five remaining hospitalized at Makadara General Hospital in Mombasa.

As Citizen TV reported live, the leak disrupted the Kiswahili exam, blanketing much of the examination area in gas.

Investigations are underway, and authorities have yet to confirm the leak’s origin. However, nearby businesses are suspected due to a shared dumping site just outside the school compound.

With 90 students registered for the exam, 84 continued their Kiswahili exam after being relocated to Makande Boys Secondary School.

The five students still in the hospital are anticipated to be released later in the day, after which they’ll sit for the missed examination. Today’s schedule includes the Kiswahili Language exam in the morning and Insha in the afternoon.

Parents have been reassured that students have been evacuated from the school premises and that those in the hospital are stable.

The area with the highest gas concentration has been secured as investigations proceed.

This incident adds to a series of tragedies impacting this year’s KCSE exams, now in their fourth day.

Exams commenced Monday with a tragic report from Meru, where a male KCSE candidate from Tigania West passed away at midnight, just hours before his scheduled exam.

On Tuesday, November 6, a second incident occurred when a candidate from Ebubere Secondary School in Mumias collapsed and passed away in the exam room shortly before his 8:00 a.m. math paper.
