Kenya’s Elite Counter-Terrorism Unit Foils Al Shabaab IED Attack on Key Highways

Kenya’s elite counter-terrorism unit, the Special Operations Group (SOG), successfully intercepted a looming terror attack by Al Shabaab on Tuesday, November 5, following an intelligence-driven operation.

The operation targeted two Al Shabaab camps near the Kenya-Somalia border. According to Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), these camps functioned as assembly hubs for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

CTP reported that these IED manufacturing sites were producing explosives intended for attacks along Garissa and Lamu highways, aiming to hinder both commercial and civilian movements.

“The camps were to be used for attacks intended to disrupt transportation and commercial operations on key routes connecting Garissa and Lamu counties,” stated the CTP.

When SOG forces engaged the militants, a gunfight broke out, forcing the militants to flee due to the SOG’s superior firepower. The team seized various IED components, including detonators, switches, IED cylinders, and sodium nitrates, along with ammunition and communication devices.

“The militants, unable to withstand the SOG’s firepower, abandoned the camps, leaving behind IED components, bullets, communication gadgets, and rocket launcher ammunition,” a statement confirmed.

This recent operation is part of an ongoing counter-terrorism effort across the wider North Eastern region as law enforcement intensifies actions to prevent attacks and protect residents who have assisted in combatting terrorism.

The operation followed an IED blast along the Wajir-Mandera route that significantly damaged a police vehicle. Police reported that five officers on board sustained only minor injuries.

Since then, law enforcement has escalated activities in the area to dismantle Al Shabaab’s plans to establish operational bases and execute targeted attacks.

SOG reiterated its unwavering commitment to the protection and security of all Kenyans, emphasizing that this mission remains their primary focus. “Ensuring the safety and security of Kenyans is our top priority,” SOG declared.

The unit also extended its appreciation to the local communities for their ongoing collaboration with security agencies in combating terrorism.

“We express our gratitude to residents for their invaluable cooperation in sharing critical information that aids in counter-terrorism efforts,” affirmed the SOG.
