Kang’ata-Raila Surprise Meeting Sparks DP Speculation and Mt Kenya Power Struggle

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata’s unexpected meeting with Azimio leader Raila Odinga has ignited widespread online chatter, with many speculating about the timing and potential political implications of the high-profile encounter.

Known for focusing on local issues and rarely engaging in national politics, Kang’ata met the former ODM Chair on Wednesday, October 16, at an undisclosed location. He stated that the purpose was to review the progress of devolution in Kenya.

Sharing the moment on his X account, Kang’ata posted a photo with Raila Odinga, both smiling as they exchanged a symbolic handshake. He captioned the image, “The Right Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Odinga invited me this morning for consultations. We had a great discussion on national unity and the achievements under devolution.”

Despite the carefully crafted message, many Kenyans interpreted the meet-up as the beginning of a potential political alliance. Some speculated that Kang’ata might be gearing up to accept the role of Deputy President.

Responses to his tweet came swiftly, with some Kenyans cautioning Kang’ata against taking the DP’s position. They warned him about the political risks, hinting that such a move could jeopardize his career.

One user remarked, “I hope you didn’t agree to take Gachagua’s place. You’re playing a dangerous game. They’ll use you and discard you. Stick to Murang’a, boss.”

Another chimed in, “Avoid the poisoned chalice. Everyone who goes for that seat ends up regretting it. Don’t become the next victim!”

Damaris Njeri added, “Mount Kenya is still volatile. Don’t sabotage yourself, Governor. Murang’a needs your leadership now more than ever.”

This surprise meeting follows Kang’ata’s involvement in a gathering with over 40 legislators, led by Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, at a Nairobi hotel to discuss the possibility of him stepping into the Deputy President’s shoes.

During the meeting, Kang’ata was praised for his leadership in Murang’a and his rapid political rise, from councilor to MP, senator, and now governor.

The push to keep the Deputy President’s position within the Mt. Kenya region has led to heightened tension and political infighting, with other contenders such as Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki being considered for the role.
