President Ruto Appoints Munyori Buku as New Head of Presidential Communications

On Wednesday, President William Ruto appointed Munyori Buku, a former journalist for Nation Media and Standard Group, as the new Head of the Presidential Communications Service.

Previously, Buku served as Secretary for Public Communications at the State House, bringing over 26 years of expertise in strategic communications and media across both public and private sectors.

Throughout his career, Buku held key positions such as Senior Director of Public Communications at the State House, Director of Communications for the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, and Editorial Manager at the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board.

In the private sector, Buku’s editorial experience includes roles like Managing Editor at the Standard Group and Sub-Editor at Nation Media Group, among other leadership positions.

Buku began his professional journey in education, working as a teacher in various Kenyan high schools between 1990 and 1997 before shifting to media and communications.

In October 1998, he joined the Nation Media Group, where he worked for three years before moving to the Standard Media Group as Managing Editor of the weekend editions.

After six years at Standard Group, Buku transitioned to the role of Director of Communications for the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for two years before advancing to a top role at State House.

In 2013, Buku was appointed Senior Director of Public Communications at the Office of the President, a position he held for seven years until his resignation in 2022.

Buku holds a postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from Kenyatta University.

This appointment follows President William Ruto’s recent dissatisfaction with his communications team, citing failures in addressing communication challenges related to the finance bill during a July interview.

The President noted that misinformation surrounding the bill, including false proposals, was not effectively countered due to lapses in communication strategy.

“We didn’t communicate well enough. My communication team failed, and our structure was not up to the task,” President Ruto stated during a press interview at State House.
