Rigathi Gachagua Breaks Silence After Being Impeached
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reacted late Tuesday night to the overwhelming vote by the National Assembly, with 281 members backing his impeachment.
In a response shared on his social media platforms, Gachagua posted a cryptic message, referencing 1 Thessalonians 5:18 from the Bible: “Give thanks in all circumstances; this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
He continued by quoting another biblical passage from Jeremiah 30:19, “From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.”
Despite the National Assembly’s decision, Gachagua added, “It is well,” signaling his acceptance of the vote to remove him from office.
On Tuesday evening, the deputy president was impeached after 281 MPs supported the motion, while 44 opposed it, and one abstained.

Before the decision, Gachagua was given two hours to defend himself against 11 charges. He described the impeachment as unjust, arguing he was merely following the example set by his superior.
Addressing accusations of inflammatory comments about the National Intelligence Service (NIS) chief, Noordin Haji, Gachagua said his remarks mirrored those of President William Ruto, who as deputy president, criticized key security officials under President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gachagua explained, “I voiced my concerns publicly in Mombasa, just as leaders in other nations do when intelligence agencies fail.”
Following the vote, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi is expected to table the impeachment motion before the Senate. Kingi will call for a special session within seven days to allow lawmakers to discuss the charges.
The Senate will then create an 11-member committee to investigate the 11 charges over 10 days.
Once the committee presents its findings, the Senate will determine if there are sufficient grounds for impeachment. If not, the motion will be dismissed immediately.
If the Senate upholds the charges, Gachagua will be given a final hearing, after which senators will vote on his fate.
