Rigathi Gachagua: I Know Children of Some People Who Hide Money in Cayman Island and Dubai

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua passionately defended his children against criticism regarding their investments.

In an emotional press briefing on October 7, Gachagua addressed the recent scrutiny surrounding his children’s business ventures, specifically their investments in the hospitality sector.

The Deputy President revealed that his children had been securing loans from local banks to invest in Kenya, highlighting a stark contrast with other affluent individuals who have placed their money in offshore accounts.

In a fervent statement, Gachagua questioned why his children’s commitment to local investment was met with skepticism, especially when many prominent families chose to relocate their wealth overseas.

He emphasized that his sons’ initiatives in the tourism sector aim to foster growth and generate job opportunities.

“Why should the Deputy President seek foreign investors when his children are willing to invest domestically? Many individuals I know keep their funds hidden in places like Dubai and the Cayman Islands, refusing to invest here. What wrongdoing have the children of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya committed by borrowing money from a bank to purchase a hotel, stimulate tourism, create jobs, and enhance local business?” Gachagua asserted.

How has scrutiny impacted Gachagua’s children?

With a tremor in his voice, Gachagua shared that his children felt disheartened by the public examination.

He mentioned that the boys expressed frustration over being perceived as criminals solely due to their familial connections.

“They are incredibly demoralized, asking me, ‘Dad, why didn’t you tell us itโ€™s a crime to be your children? Why canโ€™t we have our own lives? If we want to invest in our country, must we do so under a proxy to hide our identities? Are we criminals just because we are your kids?'” Gachagua reflected.

    Gachagua seeks forgiveness from Ruto

Earlier, Gachagua requested forgiveness from President William Ruto for any actions he may have taken that the president viewed as inappropriate.

The beleaguered deputy president also asked for Ruto’s forgiveness on behalf of his wife, Dorcas Rigathi, who had also been implicated in the impeachment motion against him.

Gachagua’s heartfelt appeal comes as the debate surrounding his impeachment motion by members of the National Assembly looms.
