I’m a Lonely Man, DP Says Ahead of Impeachment Motion
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained how he has acquired his property since he assumed office.
The DP said loneliness drove him to buy land in Meru to be near his family members from his mother’s side.
While addressing the nation on Monday from his official residence in Karen, Gachagua said he has lost most of his family members with his sisters getting married.
The DP was accused of engaging in corruption, money laundering, and abuse of office, violating anti-corruption laws.
“Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sometimes is a lonely man. His father is dead, his mother is dead, and his brother Nderitu Gachagua, the governor, died of pancreatic cancer,” Gachagua said.

“His brother, Dr Fred Wachira, died because of alcohol, his other brother, Jackson, died because of alcohol, and his sisters are married. When he goes home, many times he is lonely. That is why he decided to look for some land in Meru where he can go and build a house where he can go and be with his mother’s relatives.”
“In the process, I identified a 29-acre land and borrowed money from Sacco, which I’m paying every month.”
MPs are expected to take a vote later on Tuesday after debating the grounds of impeachment and, according to Gachagua, an opportunity to defend himself.
Gachagua faces 11 charges, with his lawyers saying they have prepared a “solid and concrete response’’ to discount all the accusations.
Gachagua is accused of gross violations of the Constitution, including promoting ethnic discrimination and undermining national unity through divisive public statements.
