Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday evening, just hours before the National Assembly begins deliberations on a motion seeking his impeachment.

Earlier on Monday, Gachagua’s office dispatched invitations to various media outlets, indicating that the press conference would take place at his official residence in Karen at 7 PM.

This forthcoming address comes at a critical moment as Gachagua faces allegations that could lead to his removal from office.

The accusations against him center around claims that he has fostered division among Kenyans along ethnic lines undermined the authority of the presidency, violated his oath of office, and acted in contradiction to the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

The impeachment motion, presented by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse on October 1, outlines several serious charges against Gachagua.

Among these are allegations of corruptly acquiring property worth Ksh. 5.2 billion, inciting public opposition to directives issued by the Nairobi County government, engaging in gross misconduct, and exhibiting bullying behavior.

After receiving backing from 291 members of the National Assembly, the motion has progressed to a stage of public engagement across all 47 counties.

This widespread support indicates a significant level of discontent with Gachagua’s conduct among lawmakers.

On Tuesday, Gachagua is expected to defend himself during a trial before the MPs. To aid in his defense, he has assembled a legal team led by experienced attorney Paul Mwite, who will present arguments on his behalf.

This legal representation is crucial as Gachagua seeks to counter the serious allegations leveled against him and maintain his position in office.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the National Assembly and Gachagua’s responses to the pressing issues at hand.
