Chaos Unfolds in Nyeri, Kiambu as Gachagua Impeachment Talks Begin

Public consultation on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was temporarily suspended on Friday due to chaos at a venue in Nyeri County.

During the protest, residents opposed the National Assembly’s calls to impeach Gachagua, arguing that the deputy president was elected alongside the president.

Footage obtained by Gossipa2z.com shows residents lighting bonfires outside the public participation venue, prompting security officers to step in.

“No Rigathi, no Ruto. Don’t mess with the mountain. We fully support Gachagua,” residents chanted, halting the proceedings and claiming that the impeachment attempt was politically motivated.

Protesters also blocked the road to Nyeri town, disrupting transport and business activities in the area. The demonstrations were eventually curtailed when more police officers were deployed.

Despite police intervention, the defiant locals vowed to keep protesting, urging President William Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua to resolve their issues internally.

A similar situation occurred in Kiambu County, where locals disrupted a public consultation to express frustration over the National Assembly’s move to oust Gachagua. “This is like a marriage, and if Gachagua leaves, Ruto must leave too,” one resident stated.

Some residents also expressed dissatisfaction with how the public consultation was conducted, alleging that the process was compromised as it was based solely on paperwork.

“If it were done properly, like allowing us to vote electronically on their website, it would be more credible. But with paperwork, the results can be altered before reaching parliament,” another Kiambu resident argued.

The public consultation process formally began on October 4 and is set to conclude on October 5, allowing Kenyans to express their views under Article 182 of the Constitution, which requires parliamentary facilitation of citizen engagement in such processes.

Kenyans were invited to share their opinions on the impeachment by sending them to impeachment@parliament.go.ke.

Alternatively, they could submit their views in person at their local collection centers listed in the public participation notice.

On October 1, an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was presented in the National Assembly and supported by 29 MPs, leading to the initiation of the public consultation exercise.
