Nigerian MPs Fly to Kenya for Benchmarking Tour
A delegation of Nigerian MPs from the National Assembly and Senate visited the Kenyan Parliament on Tuesday for a learning tour. They aimed to gain practical insights to apply in Nigeria.
The delegation was led by Miriam Odinaka-Onouha, a House of Representatives member, and Senator Patrick Ndubueze. They were hosted by Kenyan National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, who discussed mutual interests with them.
The visit was part of a Strategic International Parliamentary Learning Tour, allowing selected Nigerian National Assembly members to engage with other global parliaments on gender-responsive legal reforms.
“We must continuously engage each other on legislative processes, sharing successes and challenges in delivering services to our people,” Shollei said, as quoted by the official Parliament social media.
The Nigerian delegation’s benchmarking tour will focus on five priority areas: committee mandates, composition, powers, activities, and effective coordination among committees.

Additionally, they plan to explore the implementation of committee recommendations, the oversight role, and the budget allocation process.
Deputy Speaker Shollei praised the Kenyan Parliament for its progress, especially in gender-responsive reforms.
Shollei noted the progress in empowering women in Kenya, including more female legislators and other governance improvements.
“Kenya has made significant strides in gender-mainstreaming and affirmative action. While we haven’t yet achieved the ultimate numbers for gender balance in both the National Assembly and Senate, we are moving in the right direction,” Shollei said.
In August 2024, Nigerian delegates also visited Kenya for a wildlife conservation benchmarking session in Laikipia County, led by Minister of Environment Izaq Adenkule.
Coincidentally, the Nigerian lawmakers arrived as 291 Members of Kenya’s National Assembly signed a motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kenya and Nigeria share similar governance structures, leading to regular benchmarking visits by leaders from both countries.
