List of MPs Who Have Publicly Distanced Themselves From Gachagua Impeachment

Shortly after Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse formally introduced an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, October 1, several lawmakers publicly distanced themselves from it.

Nyali MP Mohamed Ali announced his opposition to the impeachment, stating it was ill-intentioned. He clarified that he did not support the charges against Gachagua, emphasizing the deputy president’s significant contributions to the country.

Ali also made it clear that he had not signed the motion against Gachagua.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya also opposed the motion, asserting that he would vote against it when the opportunity arose. Salasya stated that he had promised his constituents not to sign the motion despite facing pressure and would follow through with a ‘No’ vote.

Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba also spoke out against the motion, arguing that the charges against Gachagua were unwarranted and metaphorically referring to it as a case of a “hyena accusing its baby of smelling like a goat.” Kipchumba declared that his conscience opposed the motion.

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba also voiced her stance, stating that she had consulted her constituents and would vote against the impeachment if the time came.

Mutuse, while tabling the motion in Parliament, accused Gachagua of corruption, money laundering, gross misconduct, and unlawfully acquiring assets beyond his salary, violating various laws, including the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula approved the motion, noting that it met the required threshold after 291 MPs signed it. Wetangula also announced that public participation would take place across all 47 counties on Friday, October 4, with Gachagua scheduled to defend himself against the charges on October 8, 2024.
