Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could soon face impeachment as Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has officially introduced a motion in Parliament, asserting that the allegations against him are substantial enough to remove him from office.

On Tuesday afternoon, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the impeachment motion against the Deputy President, noting that it had garnered support from 291 MPs—surpassing the required threshold. A minimum of 117 MPs must support a motion for it to be tabled.

MP Mutuse presented a 100-page document containing sufficient evidence to substantiate his claims that Gachagua is unfit for office.

“Article 145 (1) of the Constitution allows a member of the National Assembly, supported by at least a third of its members, to initiate an impeachment motion against the president or deputy president for gross violation of the Constitution,” stated Speaker Wetangula.

He continued, “After reviewing the special motion submitted by Kibwezi West MP, I find that it meets the constitutional requirements for threshold.”

He added, “I have also confirmed that the number of members who signed in support of this motion exceeds the minimum requirement of 117 members.”

While presenting the motion, MP Mutuse argued that the Deputy President’s actions over the past two years have breached his oath of office.

“The motion lists 11 specific grounds for impeachment. In compliance with the law, these grounds are clearly defined, precise, and supported by convincing documentation, affidavits, and electronic evidence,” stated Mutuse.

“I will also call upon live witnesses to testify and confirm the evidence presented in support of the impeachment grounds.”

Some of the allegations include Gachagua’s attempts to divide Kenyans along ethnic lines, undermining the presidency, violating his oath of office, and contravening the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

Other accusations involve allegedly amassing Ksh.5.2 billion through corrupt means, inciting the public against Nairobi County government directives, gross misconduct, and bullying.
