Wetangula Gives Way Forward on Gachagua Impeachment
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has announced that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will have an opportunity to defend himself before a decision is made regarding his impeachment.
Following the tabling of the impeachment motion against the DP, Wetangula stated in Parliament that Gachagua will have two hours on October 8, 2024, to present his defense.
The National Assembly also determined that the hearing will occur next Tuesday after public participation, which is set to conclude by this Friday.
Wetangula noted that Gachagua may either appear in person or appoint a lawyer to represent him during the session.
The motion to impeach Deputy President Gachagua was signed by 291 Members of Parliament.
Wetangula added that public participation on the impeachment motion will be conducted across all 47 counties on Friday, October 4, 2024, inviting Kenyans to express their views.
The Members of Parliament met on Tuesday, where the National Assembly Speaker approved the motion against DP Gachagua, affirming that all 11 grounds met the constitutional requirements.

Allegations against Gachagua include using his two sons to launder money, conceal proceeds of crime, engage in corruption, and benefit from influence peddling.
Other reasons for impeachment include violating his oath of office, breaching the National Cohesion and Integration Act, accumulating property unlawfully, and misleading the public on critical issues.
MPs who voted for Gachagua’s impeachment have requested security from Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja.
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed called on Wetangula to work with Kanja to ensure protection for the 291 MPs after some expressed concern for their safety over the motion to remove the country’s second-in-command.
Dadaab MP Farah Maalim supported Junet’s request, suggesting that the protection should also extend to President William Ruto, who will need to approve the motion if the DP is removed from office.
