Archdiocese of Nairobi Issues Statement on Alleged Death of John Cardinal Njue

The Archdiocese of Nairobi has issued a statement following alleged claims of His Eminence John Cardinal Njue’s death.

For the better part of Friday morning, September 27, reports on social media indicated that Cardinal Njue had passed away.ย

However, in a statement, the Archdiocese of Nairobi dismissed the claims urging members of the public to refrain from sharing unverified information.

The Archdiocese said should there be any updates regarding Cardinal Njue’s health, it will be communicated through official Church channels.

“It has come to our attention that persistent rumors are circulating regarding the alleged death of His Eminence John Cardinal Njue. His Eminence John Cardinal Njue is alive and we ask that everyone disregards these baseless rumours. We ask that you continue to keep Cardinal Njue in your prayers and we wish him continued good health and blessings,” the statement read.

Njue was ordained a priest on December 17, 1973, in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome.

Following his ordination, he served in various capacities within the Meru Diocese, including as a parish priest and later as a professor at St. Augustine Senior Seminary.

In 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the first Bishop of Embu and concentrated on pastoral care, education and social justice issues.

In 2002, Njue was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Nyeri, which prepared him for leadership in one of Kenya’s most significant archdioceses.

He became the Archbishop of Nyeri in 2007 and emphasized the importance of family values, youth empowerment, and interfaith dialogue during his tenure.

On March 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Njue to the rank of Cardinal.

Njue retired as Archbishop of Nairobi in 2021 upon reaching the age of 75.
