Mt. Kenya Kingship Heats Up: 300 MCAs Endorse CS Kithure Kindiki as Regional Political Leader

Over 300 Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), primarily from Central Kenya, have voiced their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki as the new political leader for the region.

These MCAs, hailing from Nairobi and 11 Mt. Kenya counties, including Murangโ€™a, Kiambu, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Isiolo, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi, made this endorsement in a joint press conference and a statement shared with the media.

They pledged to back the Interior CS as the key liaison between the Mt. Kenya region and the Kenya Kwanza government.

Their support follows a recent declaration by 69 regional Members of Parliament (MPs) endorsing Kindiki as their leader, citing his potential to advance the regionโ€™s development and welfare initiatives.

The MCAs reaffirmed their loyalty to President William Ruto’s administration, noting Kindikiโ€™s role in uniting the region behind national goals.

โ€œAs grassroots leaders, we represent the people and face numerous challenges regarding welfare. Weโ€™ve identified Prof. Kithure Kindiki as the right leader to champion our development and interests,โ€ said the joint statement.

They expressed confidence in Kindikiโ€™s ability, emphasizing his experience and capacity to address Mt. Kenyaโ€™s development while balancing national progress.

The leaders condemned the ongoing rivalry between Kindiki and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, labeling it as โ€œdivisive and counterproductive,โ€ and expressed concerns over Mt. Kenya becoming a subject of ridicule.

They echoed President Rutoโ€™s vision for unity and pledged to work alongside Kindiki to accelerate regional development.

โ€œAs the President focuses on completing stalled projects and initiating new ones, we urge all leaders to prioritize development in ways that strengthen national unity,โ€ they said.

They also addressed external narratives that portray Mt. Kenya leadership as โ€œethnically divisive,โ€ insisting the region should rise above such perceptions.

The MCAs stressed Kenyaโ€™s need for unity, denouncing any attempts to divide the nation along ethnic lines, which they believe harm the region’s progress and service delivery.

CS Kindiki, who has agreed to champion the MCAsโ€™ welfare, is expected to provide feedback on the endorsement within 30 days.

The MCAs highlighted key issues Kindiki would focus on, including improving their work conditions, securing the ward development fund, pensions, financial independence for county assemblies, and addressing motor vehicle reimbursement taxation.

The announcement followed another endorsement of Kindiki by over 2,000 Njuri Ncheke elders from Mt. Kenya East.
