Morara Kebaso & Mercy Tarus Clash Over ‘Kenya Ni Home’ Slogan

Tensions are mounting within the anti-government movement that emerged in response to the controversial 2024 Finance Bill, as two factions accuse each other of diverting the revolution’s goals for personal gain.

Activists Morara Morara and Mercy Tarus have publicly clashed over the ownership of the ‘Kenya Ni Home’ slogan, with each claiming leadership of the movement. Both, heading separate civic education groups, have been actively using the slogan in their recent campaigns.

On X (formerly Twitter), Tarus criticized Morara, accusing him of using the slogan for personal political advancement. She expressed frustration, saying, “We agree on one thing, but you do the opposite. We may have the same enemy, but our motives differ,” she wrote on the platform.

Tarus emphasized that the movement isnโ€™t about individual saviors but collective efforts. She warned, “Some seek political power, while others have different intentions. Kenya Ni Home must be respected.”

As recently as September 8, the two seemed united, both leveraging the slogan in their campaigns. Morara shared a hopeful message on his account, declaring, “We are stronger together. The Kenya Ni Home Movement will shake the nation through civic education.” Tarus even responded with encouragement, saying, “Welcome, brother. It’s time!”

The dynamic changed when Morara solicited new slogan ideas from his followers, acknowledging that another group was already using ‘Kenya Ni Home.’ He asked for suggestions to help define their movement’s direction.

Tarus, who gained popularity after confronting Uasin Gishu officials, had been using the slogan in her civic education initiativesโ€”initiatives Morara claimed leadership over. She voiced frustration, alleging that Morara often disregards her advice but takes credit for her ideas.

Her critique deepened as she warned Morara against falling for the allure of fame. “You seek my advice, use my plans, and act superior. Fame is addictive, and you’re chasing the high,” she said, questioning the origins of funding for some activists.

This exchange followed Morara’s announcement that a well-wisher had gifted him a mansion to serve as a base for his civic education initiatives across the country.
