Afternoon traffic along Waiyaki Way experienced minor disruptions on Saturday when a government vehicle caught fire near the Mountain View area, close to Kangemi in Nairobi County.

The blaze, which occurred around 12:30 pm, involved a Station Wagon with GK plates and had only the driver onboard.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle abruptly caught fire, causing a brief commotion on the highway.

The driver escaped unharmed, managing to recover only a backpack which he secured until police from Kabete Police Station arrived.

Dagoretti Sub-County Deputy OCPD Joyce Iminza stated that the vehicle, part of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), was heading to their Gilgil headquarters when the driver noticed smoke from the engine.

Firefighters from Nairobi County put out fire from a car that burst into flames at Mountain View area along Waiyaki Way.

โ€œThe driver tried to steer toward the median strip but was thwarted by the high curb and decided to pull over to check the issue. Despite attempts by passersby to help, the vehicle quickly ignited,โ€ explained Ms. Iminza.

The Nairobi Fire Department arrived later to douse the flames. Kabete Police Station officers managed the scene as spectators gathered, with some attempting to salvage vehicle parts for scrap metal.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the police.

Crime Scene Investigators have processed the scene, with police chief Iminza confirming that this is standard procedure for such incidents.

The burned vehicle was towed to Kabete Police Station as authorities continued to probe the fireโ€™s origin.
