Trump Vows Mass Deportations of Haitian Immigrants in Ohio City
Donald Trump, a Republican presidential contender, vowed on Friday to carry out large-scale deportations of Haitian immigrants from Springfield, Ohio, despite most of them being legally present in the U.S.
Springfield has been at the epicenter of a social media storm after right-wing figures promoted false allegations that Haitian newcomers were consuming pets.
At a press conference at his golf resort near Los Angeles, Trump declared, “We will do large deportations in Springfield, Ohio.”
The bulk of the 15,000 Haitians in Springfield are legally residing there. Trump’s typical pledge for mass deportations targets those who are in the country unlawfully.
Trump did not reiterate his earlier assertion from a debate with Democrat Kamala Harris that immigrants were eating dogs and cats, a claim that has been widely ridiculed.
On Friday, after receiving anonymous bomb threats for the second consecutive day, two elementary schools were evacuated and one middle school in Springfield was shut down, according to ABC News.
President Joe Biden, from the White House, called for an end to the attacks on the Haitian community.
“This is simply wrong. It has no place in America. This needs to stop – what he’s doing. It has to stop,” Biden stated.

In June, the Biden administration extended Temporary Protected Status to hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the U.S., a program that safeguards legal immigrants from deportation and provides work permits. Due to gang violence in Haiti, over half a million people have been displaced, and nearly five million are experiencing severe food shortages.
Trump has used the situation in Springfield to argue for stricter immigration policies. While the arrival of Haitians has spurred economic growth, it has also put a strain on social services.
At a Las Vegas rally later on Friday, Trump expressed frustration over what he called illegal Haitian migrants “taking over Springfield, Ohio.”
He further vented his anger about young American girls being raped and murdered by what he described as “savage criminal aliens” entering the country unlawfully.
Haitian leaders nationwide have warned that Trump’s comments could endanger lives and exacerbate tensions in Springfield.
Springfield’s mayor, Rob Rue, told ABC News, “We need help, not hate.”
City officials reported no credible instances of animals being eaten and noted that while there were no recent hate crimes against Haitian residents, some had been victims of property theft.
