US Issues Travel Advisory, Citing Fears of 9/11 and Westgate Anniversary Terror Attacks in Kenya
The US government has issued a new terror advisory for its citizens in Kenya, emphasizing the significance of September.
According to the US Embassy in Kenya, September marks the anniversary of major terrorist incidents, including the 9/11 attacks in the US and the September 21, 2013, Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi.
The 9/11 attacks resulted in 2,977 deaths, while the Westgate Mall attack claimed 67 lives.
The embassy warns that while terrorist attacks can happen anytime, the risk increases around anniversaries of previous attacks, such as September 11 and the Westgate Mall attack on September 21. This was highlighted in the September 13 advisory.

Additionally, the embassy points out the nearing first anniversary of the Hamas surprise attack on Israel, which took place on October 7, 2023.
US citizens in Kenya are urged by the embassy to exercise heightened caution due to the persistent risks of terrorism and kidnapping. Locations popular among US citizens, foreigners, and tourists in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya remain potential terrorist targets.
As a safety measure, the embassy advises US citizens to stay alert in tourist-heavy areas, review their security strategies, follow local news, avoid protest sites, steer clear of crowds, and maintain a low profile.
The British High Commission in Kenya echoed the US Embassy’s advisory.
In an updated advisory on September 13, the High Commission reiterated the US Embassy’s warning, noting that areas near Somalia could void travel insurance if citizens ignore the advisory and visit those regions.
