Gachagua Moves to Reassert Kingpin Authority After 48 MPs Denounced Him

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hosted several Mt. Kenya leaders on Friday, following a significant political shift where 48 MPs from the region withdrew their support for him, instead backing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their preferred connection to the Executive.

The gathering took place at Gachagua’s Karen residence, with notable MPs in attendance, including Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), George Koimburi (Juja), Benjamin Mejja Donk (Embakasi Central), James Gakuya (Embakasi North), and Trizah Wanjiru (Nominated).

Nyandarua Senator John Methu and former Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru were also present. Political analysts speculate that the discussions aimed to counter the growing dissent in the Mt. Kenya region.

The announcement by the 48 MPs was orchestrated discreetly, catching the media off-guard until the lawmakers issued a united statement.

Those lawmakers gathered at former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri’s Nyahururu home, further intensifying Gachaguaโ€™s troubles as his area MP, Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), sided with Kindiki, publicly distancing himself from Gachagua.

On Thursday, prominent figures like Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town) and Alice Nganga (Thika Town) called for Gachaguaโ€™s removal as the Mt. Kenya political leader.

The dissenting MPs criticized Gachagua for poor leadership, pointing to delayed infrastructure projects in the region as proof of inefficiency.

“We have been unable to push for the development agenda for our people due to the absence of a clear leader who can represent our interests to the government,” the MPs stated.

They highlighted the stalling of key projects like the Mau Mau Road, which had been promised under the Kenya Kwanza government.

Meanwhile, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba downplayed the Nyahururu declaration, claiming it only strengthened Gachaguaโ€™s position as Mt. Kenyaโ€™s leader.

“The attempt to isolate DP Gachagua is futile. Their declaration is empty rhetoric aimed at disrupting the political scene, but it will only make Gachagua stronger,” Wamuchomba posted on X.

Gachagua is scheduled to appear in Nyeri Town for the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) show at Kabiruini grounds on Friday.
