48 Mt. Kenya MPs Reject Deputy President, Endorse Kindiki as Regional Leader
In a move that could reshape the 2027 election landscape, 48 MPs from Mt. Kenya on Thursday publicly rejected Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, endorsing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the region’s prospective leader.
The MPs, predominantly from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), convened in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County, and vowed to support Kindiki, positioning him as a political rival to the Deputy President.
However, the lawmakers emphasized that Mt. Kenya’s unity must align with national unity, rejecting the idea of a region-specific focus. This stance counters the DP’s frequent calls for the unification of Mt. Kenya.
“We firmly believe that regional unity must be pursued in the context of national unity. We are one indivisible nation, and our priority is the entire country – Kenya Kwanza,” part of their statement read.
The MPs also committed to advancing legislation that would prioritize development projects in both the region and the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We pledge to intensify our efforts to ensure key projects in the Kenya Kwanza Plan, benefitting both our region and diaspora communities, are implemented,” the statement continued.
The meeting further addressed the controversial farming sector reforms, with Gachagua advocating for improved coffee and tea prices.
However, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has criticized these efforts, branding them as politically motivated.
The MPs also reignited the “One Man, One Shilling, One Vote” debate, a highly sensitive issue in the Mt. Kenya region.
“We are determined to push for a fair revenue allocation formula that benefits our constituents,” they added.
This gathering took place against the backdrop of political division in the region, as some Mt. Kenya East leaders declared Kindiki their preferred leader.
Notably, many MPs loyal to Rigathi Gachagua were absent from the meeting.
