2027 Politics Take Shape as ODM Politicians Decamp to UDA

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Interim Secretary General Hassan Omar welcomed defectors from Marsabit Countyโ€™s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Tuesday, signaling the ruling partyโ€™s strategy to consolidate power ahead of the 2027 elections.

Representatives from the Burji community, a minority group, revealed their political shift after discussions with Secretary General Omar at UDAโ€™s Nairobi headquarters.

These leaders pledged their loyalty to President William Ruto, vowing to support his nationwide initiatives.

Omar emphasized UDAโ€™s commitment to inclusivity, aiming to reflect a national perspective that welcomes minority voices.

He also announced the creation of a department within UDA to address the interests of diverse demographics across Kenya.

Omar noted the partyโ€™s and governmentโ€™s accelerated focus on enhancing the potential of Kenyaโ€™s arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL).

Key areas Omar highlighted included agriculture, commerce, and economic growth, aligned with UDAโ€™s manifesto.

These defections follow President Rutoโ€™s development tour of the Nyanza region, where he was received by prominent ODM figures like Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi.

With a challenging 2027 election ahead, Ruto is seeking to secure every vote in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

The president is also inching closer to securing ODM leader Raila Odingaโ€™s support, following Odingaโ€™s endorsement for an African Union Commission (AUC) role at State House, Nairobi.

Appointing coastal politician Hassan Ali Joho as Mining Cabinet Secretary is anticipated to boost Rutoโ€™s support in the coastal region.

Attention now shifts to other parts of the country as the election nears.
