Hanifa: How we utilised Sh31.6 million raised for Finance Bill protest victims

Activist and journalist Hanifa Farsafi has unveiled a detailed report on the contributions made by Kenyans to support victims of the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Kenyans collectively raised Sh31,663,580 million to assist those who were injured and the families of those who lost their lives during the protests.

The youth spearheaded a two-month nationwide protest demanding better governance.

Hanifa spearheaded the fundraising effort through the M-Changa platform to provide aid to those injured in the protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, Hanifa explained that the audit aimed to provide transparency to donors, showing how the funds were allocated for medical expenses, support for bereaved families, and assistance for both seriously and permanently injured victims.

Hanifa emphasized that the fundraiser was conducted with the utmost accountability, ensuring no payments were made without proper documentation.

She disclosed that Kenyans contributed a total of Sh31,663,580 million from 35,444 individual donors.

The fundraiser provided support to 208 individuals and families, disbursing a total of Sh30,296,574.

The audit report stated that the funds were allocated to those who were seriously injured, permanently injured, and bereaved, based on the available resources and projected medical expenses.

The report detailed that Sh10,126,963 million was spent on medical bills for 95 injured individuals.

It also revealed that 46 seriously injured individuals received Sh7,767,681 million in support.

To assist five individuals who were permanently injured, Sh2,081,930 million was allocated.

Sh10,320,000 million was used to support 208 bereaved families, according to the report.

The report mentioned that ten hospitals across the country benefited from the funds to cover medical bills.

Additionally, the report outlined the administration costs of the fundraiser.

Mobi-Changa Limited charged a standard platform fee of 4.25% of the raised funds to cover expenses related to receiving donations, communicating with donors, and authenticating and auditing causes.

The platform fee for this fundraiser amounted to Sh1,345,702. Additionally, Mobi-Changa Limited charged a 2.5% fee for individual donations made via credit and debit cards, with a total card processing fee of Sh21,304, which included a rebate from the card processor.

The report confirmed that all medical bills were paid directly on behalf of the injured.

For those seriously and permanently injured, medical bills were verified against patient records and payment receipts from hospitals and clinics.

“Through our review of discharge documents, we noted that many of the patients in the serious and permanent categories received medical bill support from the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) disaster fund, which explains their lower medical expenses,” the statement noted.

The report further mentioned that burial permits and post-mortem reports were validated for financial support to bereaved families.

For financial aid to the seriously injured, a signed and sealed affidavit confirming the severity of the injury, a hospital bill proving admission, and the national ID of the recipient were required before funds were allocated.

Similarly, for financial support to the permanently injured, a signed and sealed affidavit attesting to the permanent nature of the injury, a hospital bill proving admission, and the recipient’s national ID were verified.

Hanifa expressed her gratitude to Kenyans and everyone involved in ensuring the fundraiser’s success.

She acknowledged the challenges she faced during the fundraising period.

“Managing this was a test for me; there were moments when I broke down in public restrooms and screamed into my pillow. But, my God, I would do it all over again if it meant taking care of our comrades,” she said.

She also noted that she made every effort to ensure no one was left stranded or without support.

“Whether it was in the hospital, the morgue, or with burial expenses. Thank you so much for everything. May you never lack, and may the universe always be kind to you. Iโ€™m crying as I type this. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Iโ€™m in awe. Thank you so much. I love you all, from the deepest, warmest parts of my heart.”
