Fourth Mpox Case Confirmed in Kenya: Truck Driver Quarantined as Health Officials Intensify Screenings

The Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni, has officially announced the detection of the fourth Mpox case in the country.

The most recent case involves a truck driver from Mombasa who was traveling towards Rwanda when he began feeling ill.

According to Muthoni, the truck driver experienced symptoms on August 28 while passing through Gilgil, which ultimately forced him to halt his journey.

This information was shared by Muthoni on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

In response to the situation, the Gilgil Sub-County Rapid Response Team was swiftly mobilized to assess and manage the case.

Muthoni reported that the patient was subsequently transported to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital (PGH), where he is currently being treated in an isolation facility.

His condition is reported to be stable at this time. This latest case follows earlier confirmed cases in Taita Taveta, Busia, and Nairobi, reflecting the geographical spread of the virus across different regions of the country.

The National Public Health Laboratory has been actively involved in monitoring the situation and has processed a total of 90 samples to date.

Out of these, four samples have tested positive for Mpox, while two additional samples are still awaiting confirmation.

The Ministry of Health is conducting ongoing surveillance and has identified 30 individuals who are being closely monitored as contacts of confirmed cases.

These contacts are distributed across Busia, Mombasa, Nairobi, and Nakuru, indicating a broad area of concern.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health has been diligent in screening individuals for Mpox, with a total of 599,380 people screened as of August 31.

In the past 24 hours alone, 16,533 people were screened at various points of entry, underscoring the governmentโ€™s efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

This extensive screening process is part of the broader public health initiative to contain and manage the outbreak, aiming to protect the population from further transmission.
