Ruto Reveals Timeline to Include More ODM Leaders in Govt Ahead of 2027

President William Ruto on Friday suggested expanding his administration by incorporating more Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders as part of his strategy to reduce the party’s opposition influence.

During a speech in Ugunja, Siaya, at Cabinet Secretary James Wandayi’s homecoming ceremony, Ruto mentioned that he had engaged in discussions with ODM leaders, including Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, to outline the future direction.

Ruto disclosed that he and the ODM leaders reached an agreement to join forces with him in 2027 when he plans to seek re-election for a second term.

“I want to announce that Junet Mohamed is now the new Leader of the Minority, and yesterday we agreed that after three years, they will step back from their opposition role and allow others to take it up,” Ruto stated.

“Because by then, we will all be part of the government. After three years, those who are interested in an opposition role can take over.”

President Ruto also dismissed claims that he was deceiving Kenyans by integrating some ODM leaders into his revamped administration.

He emphasized the importance of leaders collaborating beyond political lines and praised the former Prime Minister for agreeing to work with him.

“I’ve heard some leaders saying that our agreement with Raila Odinga is a disservice to Kenyans. I want to assure them that Raila Odinga understands what is best for Kenya,” Ruto clarified.

“I believe Raila’s decision to collaborate with me for the nation’s progress and stability is the right move at this time,” the president added.

Ruto’s remarks come a week after Junet Mohamed denied rumors of an ODM coalition with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The National Assembly Minority Leader clarified that ODM’s recent engagement with UDA was aimed at promoting national unity.

“Some of our members have chosen to join Ruto’s administration, and we should let them fulfill their roles. Those of us remaining in the opposition will continue our oversight duties, so the rumors about an ODM-UDA merger are unfounded,” the Suna East MP explained.

“This is like a common-law partnership; some members met the president and secured positions, while we will continue with our path.”
