KUPPET Teachers Storm School to Eject Colleagues From Classroom, Defy Court Order as Teachers’ Strike Intensifies

A group of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) members from Nyandarua County disrupted classes at Weru Secondary School on Wednesday after learning that some colleagues were still teaching despite union orders to cease work.

KUPPET officials entered the school demanding explanations for why some teachers ignored the directive to participate in the nationwide strike.

The officials encountered teachers hired by the school board, who were instructing students. These teachers are privately employed and not part of the public education system.

โ€œAny teachers reporting to this school should be told to join us in Engineer Town for the demonstration,โ€ the officials warned the principal present.

This incident occurred just a day after the High Court paused the KUPPET teachers’ strike following a legal challenge from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

In the ruling, Justice James Rika of the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi marked the TSCโ€™s petition as urgent.

KUPPET was ordered to halt the strike until the case is fully heard and determined.

Despite the court’s decision, KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori on Tuesday instructed union members to disregard the ruling and continue with the strike.

โ€œAs the strike enters its third day, we encourage our members to stay focused and keep picketing until a satisfactory return-to-work agreement is signed,โ€ he stated.

The Secretary-General emphasized that the strike would continue until their demands are met, stressing the importance of quality education for all.

โ€œThis cause goes beyond teachers; itโ€™s about securing quality education for all Kenyan children,โ€ he added.

On Sunday, August 25, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called off its strike notice after successful negotiations with the TSC, leaving KUPPET as the sole teachers’ union continuing with the strike.
