I’m Now The Official Opposition Leader, Kalonzo Says Amid Raila’s AUC Bid
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is set to assume leadership of the Azimio Coalition following Raila Odingaโs departure to pursue the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) on Tuesday.
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) head Eugene Wamalwa affirmed that there would be no leadership vacuum within the coalition. As the second-highest-ranking member, Kalonzo will automatically step into the role.
Wamalwa assured, โThereโs no gap in Azimio. Kalonzo, being the second highest-ranking member, will assume leadership.โ
He added, โYouโre either aligned with Okoa Ruto or Okoa Zakayo, or you stand with Kenyans. If you support the Kenyan constitution and its implementation, join us.โ
Although Kalonzo backs Railaโs AUC chairmanship candidacy, he chose not to attend the bidโs launch at State House to reinforce his role as the official opposition leader.
โIโm not at State House today because I want to demonstrate that I am the official opposition leader,โ Kalonzo told reporters.
He also assured, โAzimio will remain intact.โ

The coalition praised Odingaโs extensive political experience, dedication to Pan-African ideals, and his proven conflict resolution skills as key reasons for their support.
Azimio la Umoja hailed Odingaโs candidacy as a point of pride for both Kenya and Africa, expressing confidence in his potential to lead the African Union towards enhanced peace, stability, and prosperity.
The coalition stated, โWe are offering Africa and the world our finest and most distinguished leader,โ emphasizing their belief that Odingaโs leadership would greatly advance Africaโs development and unity.
Four prominent African politicians from Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, and Mauritius have announced their candidacy for the African Union’s top position.
The 55-member African Union will elect a new chair for the African Union Commission at its February summit, succeeding Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has served since 2017.
This yearโs chair role is designated for an East African representative to replace Faki, and the announced candidates are Mahamoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti, Raila Odinga from Kenya, Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar, and Anil Gayan from Mauritius.
