EACC Summons Didmus Barasa Over Bribery Allegations

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa over allegations of bribery.

The lawmaker has been directed to present himself at the commission’s headquarters on Tuesday, August 27, to respond to the bribery claims after failing to attend the initial summon.

Barasa was originally asked by the EACC to record a statement on August 14, 2024, but he did not comply.

“The Commission grants you a second opportunity to address the bribery accusations leveled against you,” the EACC stated.

“You are therefore required to report to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission’s offices at Integrity Centre, Nairobi, on August 27, 2024, at 9:00 am,” the notice further read.

The Commission warned Barasa that if he fails to appear, the investigation will proceed without his input.

The bribery case involves documents reportedly indicating that the transaction took place on December 13, 2023.

In the past, Barasa has had run-ins with law enforcement over similar accusations.

Earlier in 2023, Barasa was implicated in the fatal shooting of Brian Olunga, the assistant of Brian Khaemba, at Chebukwabi polling station.

Following the incident, the MP surrendered to authorities, leading to the confiscation of his firearm.

Subsequently, Bungoma High Court acquitted Barasa after a ten-month trial due to insufficient evidence.

Whether the MP will respond to the latest summons on August 27 to address the bribery claims remains to be seen.
