Court Orders 30-Day Detention for Self-Confessed Serial Killer Ezekiel Sakwa Amid Ongoing Investigation
A Nakuru Court has decreed that Ezekiel Mwangi Sakwa, a self-admitted serial killer, be held at Menengai Police Station for 30 days.
The decision came after the prosecution requested additional time for investigators to finalize their inquiry into the murders of three women and a child in the Olrongai region of Nakuru County.
Sakwa, 19, appeared before Molo Chief Magistrate Elena Nderitu under heavy police guard. He is accused of killing three women and a child in separate incidents in Ol Rongai.
Concerns about Sakwa’s safety were raised in court, as residents are allegedly demanding his release to seek their form of justice. The prosecution pointed out that there are ongoing reports of missing persons related to the case.
Given the severity of the charges and potential risks to Sakwa’s life, Magistrate Nderitu granted a 30-day detention period to allow the investigation to proceed.
The case will be revisited on September 19.
During the investigation, Sakwa is expected to guide homicide detectives from Nairobi County to the locations in Olrongai where he allegedly committed his crimes, including the rape and murder of his female victims.
Rongai Sub-County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed that Sakwa was apprehended last Sunday in the Ngata area.
Among the victims is 34-year-old Florence Mueni, an employee at Cooperative Bank Nakuru, who was mutilated and her body discarded in a maize field in Olrongai. Other victims include 5-year-old Blessings Ayuma, 28-year-old Vella Moraa, and 46-year-old Virginia Njeri.
All four were killed between July and August.

Police reports indicate that Sakwa described how he attacked his first victim, Blessings Ayuma, a five-year-old girl, on July 13. He murdered, sexually assaulted, and abandoned her body in a maize field in Rongai. An autopsy revealed she died from a head injury, with additional stab wounds and a rectovaginal fistula.
Sakwa’s second victim was Florence Mueni. After killing her, Sakwa returned to the scene to sever her ears and thumb, claiming he needed to deliver them to an unidentified person in Nairobi.
His third victim was Vella Moraa, whose body was reportedly also left in a maize field near Mustard Seed estate.
On August 5, Sakwa attacked Virginia Njeri at Menengai Crater, where she had gone for prayers. He killed and sexually assaulted her before discarding her body in a cave.
Sicharani disclosed that Sakwa confessed to selecting his victims randomly, robbing them of their belongings, and using one of their phones.
Sicharani noted that Sakwa claimed he was acting alone and that he believed he had superpowers during his crimes. He also mentioned a troubled personal history, including his mother’s death and being expelled from home by his father, suggesting possible cult involvement.
Rongai Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Donnatta Otieno stated that Sakwa faces charges of murder and rape.
Meanwhile, John Gaturu’s family in Olrongai is in shock. They had taken Sakwa in for five months, unaware of his criminal tendencies.
Gaturu recounted how they offered Sakwa refuge after he was found in their fields, weak and in need of assistance.
Sakwa, who had been expelled from school in July, claimed he was recently released from Naivasha Maximum Prison but did not explain his prior conviction.

Moved by his story, the Gaturu family provided him with food and housing, bought him a school uniform, and enrolled him in Olrongai Secondary School, with local support.
Initially, Sakwa appeared to adapt well, helping with chores and maintaining a positive demeanor. However, his behavior soon deteriorated. He was found with a knife, which he claimed was intended for a student who had wronged him, and was later caught with a toy gun, leading to his expulsion.
Gaturu observed further behavioral changes when Sakwa stopped attending school and showed reluctance to perform tasks, expressing a desire to leave.
Detectives discovered blood-stained blue jeans in Sakwa’s room, deepening the enigma of how he transformed from a promising youth into a serial killer.
Peter Otieno, a Nyumba Kumi official, described Sakwa as a well-behaved young man who underwent a dramatic change.
Sakwa, who arrived in Olrongai at the age of four with his mother, a casual laborer, faced a troubled path after she died in 2020. He was taken in by relatives in Naivasha but later committed serious crimes, including the assault of his sister and murder of a cousin, leading to his imprisonment. Following his release in January 2024, he claimed he wanted to return to school but eventually became a serial killer.
Mr. Otieno questioned what might have led to Sakwa’s drastic change after his release.
