A video of Jimi Wanjigi’s mum getting emotional and crying after her son’s arrest has moved Kenyans online.

Wanjigi was apprehended on Monday, August 19, at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)’s Milimani office after honoring police summons.

The billionaire had gone to record a statement over his alleged funding of the anti-government protests but was arrested.

His family has proved to be a strong front, sticking by the billionaire’s side through his turmoil.

Why Jimi Wanjigi protested his arrest

Wanjigi was on Tuesday, August 20, arraigned before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi over possession of unlicensed firearms.

Shitubi released Wanjigi on a personal bond of KSh 10 million until September 12, when a decision will be made on the charges against him.

The magistrate further ordered the Safina party leader to deposit his passport in court pending her ruling.

Wanjigi, through his lawyers, including Senior Counsel Paul Muite, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Willis Otieno, applied to defer the plea, claiming their client’s rights had been violated.

They argued that police defied a court order issued by Justice Bahati Mwamuye, stopping his arrest and detention.

After his release, Wanjigi reunited with his family. His mum, wife, son, and daughter were by his side.

What happened when police broke into Wanjigi’s home?

The businessman’s wife and children have been his anchor amid his run-ins with President William Ruto’s government.

On August 9, police raided Wanjigi’s Muthaiga home and broke the door.

They allegedly dragged everyone from their beds as they embarked on a search for the politician.

His son Maina claimed that about five officers beat him up before extending the brute force to his sister and mother.

They were forced to lie on the floor and allegedly attacked despite submitting to the police orders.

His daughter, Wambui, said the police humiliated them, but the experience strengthened their will to stand behind their embattled father.

She further noted that she had never felt prouder being Wanjigi’s daughter.
