Raila AUC Campaign Goes ‘Full Throttle’

Mr. Raila Odinga’s campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has intensified, with a critical meeting lined up with the Presidency.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei confirmed on August 19 that a detailed campaign schedule has been established, alongside the formation of a dedicated secretariat to drive the campaign’s efforts.

“We are fully committed,” stated Dr. Sing’oei.

He revealed that Mr. Odinga’s strategists have set up a campaign hub in Kilimani, Nairobi, serving as the nerve center for operations.

“We’re finalizing the budget and financial logistics this week,” noted Kenya’s former U.S. Ambassador Elkanah Odembo, who is part of Odinga’s strategic team.

A major coordination meeting is slated to happen this week involving the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, the Presidency, and Mr. Odinga.

“A seasoned diplomat will lead the campaign as our main representative, focusing solely on these efforts,” Mr. Odembo added.

Kenya faces competition from Djibouti, Mauritius, and Madagascar, all Francophone nations, which brings unique challenges to the campaign.

Odinga’s competitors include Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Youssouf, former Mauritius Foreign Minister Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, and former Madagascar Foreign Minister Richard James Randriamandrato.

“Mauritius and Madagascar belong to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), so there’s significant work to be done in the region,” Odembo remarked. “Our goal is to not only gain full backing from the East African Community but also ensure EAC unites behind this as a regional initiative.”

Mr. Odembo acknowledged Djibouti’s strategic significance in the Horn of Africa.

“Djibouti’s location makes it a hotspot for global military presence, with bases from countries like the U.S. and France. We’re mindful of these geopolitical dynamics and have integrated them into our strategy,” he said.

The team plans to continue diplomatic outreach with visits to Kigali, Brazzaville, and Kinshasa.

“These visits are part of sustained engagement, aimed at securing lasting support and rallying these nations to campaign for Kenya, Raila Odinga, and the EAC within their spheres of influence.”
