Wanjigi Arrested Despite Court Orders, to Spend Night at Kamukunji Police Station

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi was arrested on Monday and will be held at Kamukunji police station.

Authorities reported that his arrest is linked to allegations of illegal firearm possession.

The police indicated that Wanjigi is set to face charges on Tuesday, August 20.

According to the police, the Firearms Licensing Board confirmed that six rifles found at his residence were unlicensed, leading to the arrest.

โ€œThe licensing board recommended legal action against him due to the unlawful possession of firearms, which prompted his detention,โ€ stated a senior officer.

The officer clarified that the arrest was unrelated to the previous investigation into the Nane Nane protests.

โ€œThis is a separate matter, unconnected to the Nane Nane or tear gas incident,โ€ the officer added.

At around 4:20 pm, Wanjigi shared on his X account that he was being detained by police.

โ€œThe DCI has unlawfully detained me despite several court orders preventing this arrest,โ€ he posted.

On Monday, Wanjigi had voluntarily presented himself to the police for questioning regarding allegations of funding the Nane Nane protests.

Detectives also intended to question him about suspected tear gas canisters at his Muthaiga home in Nairobi.

He refuted the accusations, describing them as politically motivated.

Wanjigi had been summoned by police to appear on August 19 at the Nairobi Area DCI offices for questioning.

This followed a failed attempt to arrest him at his residence on August 8.

Accompanied by his legal team, Wanjigi arrived at the Nairobi Area DCI at around 2 pm for the grilling session.

Wanjigi had earlier sought and obtained a court order blocking his arrest.

On August 16, the court extended the order preventing his detention.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye extended the order until September 19 but noted that it does not prevent the filing of a charge sheet against Wanjigi.

The Judge explained that Wanjigiโ€™s application only addressed the arrest, not the prosecution.

Wanjigiโ€™s lawyer, Willis Otieno, requested the order.
