Matatu Owners Announce Countrywide Strike & Start Date
Members of the Matatu Movement Kenya are contemplating a nationwide strike on Tuesday to address their grievances with insurance companies and auctioneers.
They assert that increased operational costs have led banks to auction their vehicles due to loan defaults.
The closure of insurance companies has forced members to purchase new policies, resulting in financial losses.
โItโs frustrating to buy an insurance policy only to find it invalid because the company has shut down overnight without any notification,โ they noted.
They accuse insurance companies and auctioneers of collusion, alleging that auctioneers are quick to seize vehicles when matatu owners default on their premiums.
โWe refuse to accept this. If your claim is Ksh3 million, you might only receive Ksh250,000, leading to unnecessary auctions,โ they criticized auctioneers for their swift actions.

The License Board of Auctioneers, they say, has been ineffective in protecting matatu owners from harassment by auctioneers, and they are unaware of the board’s office locations.
They have called on the new Minister of Transport to take their concerns seriously and address the issue.
If the government does not respond to their concerns, they warn of a nationwide halt in transport activities.
They are seeking a framework for insurance policies that will protect policyholders in the event of a company closure or bankruptcy.
Additionally, the matatu operators have set a two-day deadline for their issues to be resolved.
If no resolution is reached, they plan to cease all operations. โIf thereโs no progress by Tuesday, public service vehicles will be off the roads as we take action,โ they warned.
