How President Ruto Will Outmaneuver Gen Z in 2027: David Ndii
Economist David Ndii predicts that President William Ruto will likely retain power beyond 2027, despite the resistance posed by the energized youth aiming to unseat him.
The public recently experienced a political awakening, pledging to use their votes to remove outdated leadership and bring progress to the country.
Young Kenyans in digital spaces are rallying behind extensive civic education campaigns leading up to the next election, determined to oust leaders accused of implementing oppressive policies.
Yet, Ndii contends that Ruto will outmaneuver this awakened youth movement.
As per the economist, who chairs the Presidential Council of Economic Advisers, the president has already deciphered the youth’s strategy and is actively working to counter it, boosting his chances of political endurance beyond his first term.
Ndii points out that Ruto’s recent countrywide tours, labeled as working visits, are a political maneuver; within just a month, the president has visited key regions including the Kenyan coast, Mt. Kenya, and Western counties.
He further notes that while the politically frustrated youth focus their efforts online, Ruto is seizing the moment, meeting voters face-to-face through these tours.

“Gen Z challenged William Ruto to a political contest. Ruto flipped the script and is on the ground strengthening his base, village by village. Meanwhile, they’re busy trolling online, and by 2027, they’ll start with the Cherera narratives,” Ndii commented.
The youth’s discontent with Ruto’s administration was primarily driven by the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which they criticized for introducing burdensome tax measures.
Their activism escalated, leading to a protest that saw the invasion of the National Assembly in June, forcing Ruto to retract the bill and return it to parliament with a recommendation for clause revisions.
Additionally, the president was pressured to dismiss his entire Cabinet, responding to public dissatisfaction with the performance of the Cabinet Secretaries.
Ruto also implemented budget cuts and reduced government expenditure to address the financial gap left by the bill’s withdrawal.
However, despite these adjustments and other concessions made by Ruto to pacify the youth, their dissatisfaction persists, with plans to maintain their push for change still firmly in place.
