In December of last year, an elderly couple from Kayole, Nairobi, decided to formalize their marriage after 16 years of cohabitation.

Stanley Macharia and Nancy Muthoni, who had been married under customary law since 1998 and had two children together, chose to make their union official through a Christian ceremony.

As they aged and remained active in their church, they resolved to celebrate their marriage in a Christian manner.

This decision was made on December 17 of the previous year during the dissolution of a committee that had organized another couple’s wedding at ACK Pumwani Church, Nairobi.

The committee then took on the task of organizing this coupleโ€™s wedding, which was set for August 17 at the same church.

Plans were so grand that the bridal party included over 50 guests. Muthoni, 57, worked at Uhuru market, while Macharia was a trader at Gikomba market.

However, events took a dramatic turn on July 27, 2024, when Muthoni fell ill, was treated at a local clinic, and then discharged.

Her condition worsened, leading to her transfer to another facility and eventually to Kenyatta National Hospital on August 4, where she was admitted.

Her admission was unexpected for the family, who were eagerly awaiting the wedding. She was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Two days later, on August 6, Muthoni passed away, leaving her family devastated as the wedding preparations were nearly complete.

Determined to honor his wifeโ€™s wishes, Macharia chose to transform the wedding day into a funeral.

On Saturday, the bridal party arrived at ACK Gikoe Church in Mathioya dressed in wedding attire.

Meanwhile, Muthoni was dressed in her wedding gown, complete with a veil and bridal makeup.

A somber atmosphere enveloped the church as attendees watched the beautifully dressed bridal party enter, dancing to gospel wedding songs.

Muthoniโ€™s casket, covered with Mothers’ Union cloths, lay at the front of the church.

The attendees praised and danced, then mourned her passing, honoring her as a devoted mother, wife, and community member who helped guide many in their faith.

Macharia expressed his wish to fulfill his wifeโ€™s dream of a wedding, stating he was pleased that, although she wasnโ€™t there in person, the ceremony had taken place.

He reflected on how they had planned for a wedding but felt that God had different plans.

Macharia emphasized that with all the preparations completed, it would have been a waste not to give his wife the wedding she had worked so hard to organize.

“I wanted her to experience the satisfaction of a wedding, and Iโ€™m glad it happened. Her spirit is at peace,” he said.

John Ng’ang’a, who was to be the best man, noted that after his wedding in December, it was agreed to plan a wedding for Macharia and Muthoni.

“As the vice-chair of the wedding committee and later the chair of the funeral committee, I was shocked when she passed just days before the event.”

Lucy Wanjiru, Muthoni’s friend and neighbor, described their deep bond, saying that Muthoni was a progressive woman who was always supportive.

“To say I was shocked by the news would be an understatement. Our friendship lasted over 25 years,” Wanjiru said.

Performers who were preparing for the wedding contributed to the funeral service.

As Muthoni was laid to rest at her husbandโ€™s maternal home, mourners accepted it as Godโ€™s will and offered solace to her family.
