Nigeria FG announces new census date

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has announced that the Nigerian population and housing census, which was originally slated for March 29, 2023, has been postponed until May of the same year.

Lai made this announcement during a press briefing with State House correspondents in Abuja following a Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister cited the postponement of the gubernatorial and State Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from March 11 to March 18 as the reason for the delay in the census.

He also revealed that the National Population Commission (NPC) had been approved by the council to spend N2.8 billion to purchase the necessary software for conducting the census.

During the press briefing, Lai said that the NPC had submitted a memo requesting the software to allow them to conduct the census in May, as they were unable to start the process as planned due to the election postponement. He added that the commission had requested council approval for the contract to purchase the software, which would cost N2.8 billion.

The population and housing census is a crucial exercise that provides accurate information about the number of people living in the country, their age distribution, their sex, their economic status, and other vital information.

The data collected during the census is used for planning and policy-making purposes and is critical for the equitable distribution of resources across the country.

In conclusion, the postponement of the population and housing census from March to May 2023 is due to the postponement of the gubernatorial and State Assembly elections by INEC.

The National Population Commission has been approved by the Federal Executive Council to spend N2.8 billion on software to be used for the census.

The census is a vital exercise that provides important information about the country’s population and is used for planning and policy-making purposes.
