List of Seven Counties NCIC Wants Their Names Changed
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has proposed renaming seven counties.
According to the NCIC, the counties—Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nandi, Kisii, Turkana, Embu, and Samburu—are linked to specific ethnic groups.
The NCIC’s report to the Senate Standing Committee on National Cohesion and Integration, Equal Opportunity, and Regional Integration indicates that this association has led to a perceived entitlement among certain communities, resulting in their overrepresentation in the allocation of public resources.
Previously, acting NCIC Secretary/CEO Harrison Kariuki suggested that the county names listed in the First Schedule of the constitution should be reconsidered.

Kariuki explained to the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security on August 6, 2024, that these names have contributed to ethnic profiling and division by giving the impression that certain counties belong to specific groups.
He reiterated to the committee, led by Saku MP Dido Raso, that reviewing county names in the First Schedule is necessary.
Additionally, Kariuki pointed out that 33 of the country’s 47 counties are experiencing boundary disputes.
The NCIC’s report recommends that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission handle boundary delimitation to avoid worsening existing disputes, deepening structural inequalities, or inciting violent conflicts among communities.
The NCIC is responsible for promoting national cohesion and integration through various initiatives.
