New Trick Nairobi Cop Uses to Collect Bribes Captured on Video
A Nairobi-based police officer is facing potential job loss following his arrest for alleged involvement in bribery.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) released a Gazette Notice on Friday, revealing that the offense took place in January 2023.
The EACC disclosed that a public complaint was received, accusing police officers of enlisting a civilian to collect bribes on their behalf.
At the time, the officers were stationed near the flyover from Muthurwa heading to the Country Bus Station in Nairobi, specifically at the junction from Gikomba.
On January 13th and 17th, 2023, surveillance was conducted at Echo Roundabout, capturing video evidence of the suspects allegedly taking bribes from public service vehicles, according to the notice signed by EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak.
Subsequently, one officer and the civilian suspected of collecting bribes were arrested.
However, the investigation determined that there was insufficient evidence to pursue bribery charges against the suspects.

On June 3, 2024, a report was compiled and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), recommending administrative action by the National Police Service Commission against the suspect, the notice further stated.
On July 24, 2024, the DPP returned the inquiry file to the EACC, endorsing administrative action.
This case was one of several bribery incidents involving police officers.
In a separate incident, a Kasarani police station officer allegedly demanded a Ksh30,000 bribe in June to release two individuals from custody.
The investigation revealed that the officer requested and received a Ksh10,000 bribe. During the arrest, the suspect resisted and caused damage to property belonging to Red Plate Restaurant.
As a result, the EACC recommended that the DPP charge the suspect with two counts of receiving a bribe and one count of obstruction, which the ODPP agreed with.
In another case, a Kisumu County Criminal Investigation Office officer allegedly demanded a Ksh500,000 bribe to drop charges against a suspect accused of stealing goods in transit.
The officer reportedly received a Ksh200,000 bribe, and the EACC forwarded the file to the ODPP on June 13. However, the file was returned for further investigation.
