Police Officer Flees After Shooting Kenyan in Custody While Drunk

The family of 23-year-old Samson Mutunga Wambua is demanding justice following an incident where their son was shot by a police officer on Friday at the Kilimambogo Police Post in Thika, Kiambu County.

The 23-year-old recounted to reporters that he and his two friends had been mistakenly detained after being wrongfully accused of a crime.

“We met with two officers from a security company who asked if we had seen a motorbike being ridden by someone trying to flee. We replied that we had not encountered anything like that. Moments later, a vehicle from the security company pulled up “

“It was at this point that the officers working with the security company accused us of being thieves and demanded that police apprehend us on trespass charges,” the victim stated.

According to the victim, during their time in the holding cell, he and his friends endured torture and whipping.

Shortly thereafter, Wambua recounted how the officer began assaulting one of his friends so severely that he started to bleed from the nose. Realizing the potential consequences of this action, the officer decided to release the injured friend.

At the same time, another officer arrived at the station to take over the shift. As the new officer took charge, the departing officer went directly to the cell and shot Wambua in the ear without any provocation.

The victim claimed that the law enforcement officer appeared to be intoxicated when he fired the shot.

In a statement to journalists, Wambua’s mother, Stella Wanzila, urged the relevant authorities to take necessary actions to ensure justice is served.

“My son was shot for no reason. He had not committed any crime. I appeal upon Interior CS Kindiki to fight this battle for me because I am a widow and my son was our family’s breadwinner,” she appealed.

Joakim Njama, the Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Ngoliba, where the Wambua family originates, has joined residents in calling for justice to be upheld.

“Police have a responsibility to serve Kenyans not to brutalize them. Let justice be served,” he stated.
