Abraham Kibiwot, Amos Serem, and Simon Koech will aim to secure additional medals for Kenya on Wednesday as they compete in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase finals.
The race is set to start at 10:43 pm East African Time.
The athletes will face tough competition from Morocco’s Soufine El Bakkali, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, and Leonard Chemutai of Uganda.
Kibiwot previously earned a bronze medal at the African Championships in Athletics in 2016, while Serem clinched gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships in 2021.
“The expectations from Kenyans are immense as we seek to reclaim a race we once dominated,” Kibiwot remarked.
In the 5000m Round 1 qualifier, Kenyan runners Jacob Krop, Edwin Kurgat, and Ronald Kwemoi will compete.
Krop, who holds a world ranking of 12th with a personal best of 12:45.71 from Brussels in 2022, will face 20 competitors including Australia’s Stewart McSweyn, USA’s Graham Blanks, and Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet in the first heat at 12:10 pm.
