We are Ready for Nane Nane protests, says Acting IG Masengeli
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli held a meeting with senior police officials on Tuesday to strategize for the upcoming anti-government protests.
He reassured that the National Police Service is prepared to ensure nationwide peace as demonstrations, named ‘NaneNanemarch,’ are planned for Thursday.
Addressing the National Police Service Campus in Embakasi after discussions with regional police leaders, Masengeli stated that while security will be increased nationwide, it will remain within normal limits.
“Every Kenyan has the legal right to demonstrate, picket, and assemble. This is well understood, and the limits of one person’s rights end where another begins,” he noted.
Masengeli emphasized that Kenyans are free to protest as long as it is done peacefully and by the law.
“We are governed by the Rome Statute and the Kenyan Constitution,” he stated, affirming that any criminal behavior will be addressed with seriousness.
He highlighted that Gen Zs have made their voices heard, but it is crucial to distinguish between them and those who exploit protests to engage in illegal activities.
He urged participants in the upcoming Nane Nane protests to comply with legal guidelines.
“This is a democratic country governed by the constitution,” the Acting Police IG reiterated.
The meeting also addressed the operational and logistical challenges faced by officers and discussed ways to enhance efficiency within the National Police Service.

The session, titled “National Security Situation – Challenges, Opportunities, and Strategies,” aimed to review urgent security issues, including civil unrest, cybercrime, and terrorism.
Masengeli used this opportunity to engage with ground commanders for the first time, asserting his position before a permanent IG of police was appointed.
He reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to working with other entities within the criminal justice system to better serve the public.
As both Acting IG and Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police, he emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the prison service.
“I want to reaffirm our dedication to working with other criminal justice agencies, including the Judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kenya Prisons Service, and the National Council on Administration of Justice,” he said.
Masengeli acknowledged that policing in a complex environment poses unique challenges and encouraged officers to reassess their strategies.
He called on all security commanders to ensure their actions were within the bounds of the law.
