State House Refutes Nation’s Report, Defends President Ruto’s Affordable Housing Program

In response to the Daily Nation article titled ‘Puzzle of Ruto Housing Projects’, the State House has issued a statement defending President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP).

State House clarified in a press release that the media’s reporting is primarily based on the auditor general’s report, which examined housing projects initiated before President Ruto took office in 2022.

The State House refuted claims made by the Daily Nation that the Boma Yangu initiative had limited success, with only 30,000 Kenyans participating in the savings scheme.

Contrarily, the State House reported that as of August 6, 2024, 531,943 Kenyans were saving over Ksh 2.26 billion through the Boma Yangu Initiative.

“Since September 2022, 103,000 affordable housing units have been launched and are at various stages of construction nationwide, creating 160,000 jobs directly and indirectly,” the Government spokesman’s office highlighted.

The President’s office stated that the uptake for units under AHP is notably high. The Government replaced 39 old housing units in Park Road with 1,379 affordable units, which sold out in 90 days.

“When 1,370 affordable units at Park Road were made available to the public, over 33,000 Kenyans paid deposits of at least 10 percent,” the statement added, noting that those who missed out are awaiting the next AHP units.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed emphasized that the housing projects mentioned in the Daily Nation article are unrelated to the Affordable Housing Project (AHP) launched by the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The statement also clarified that the AHP is distinct from previous housing programs and is a central part of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto aimed at enhancing access to decent housing.

Furthermore, the statement specified that the Kenya Development Corporation Housing units referenced in the article are not part of the Affordable Housing Program but are a housing investment scheme under the State Corporation.

The Kenya Kwanza Government has committed to building affordable houses as a key initiative to fulfill housing as a basic and social right, as outlined in Article 43(b) of the Kenyan constitution.
