Gachagua’s Impeachment: Political Theater or Real Crisis?
The political scene is once again engulfed in controversy as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua becomes embroiled in a contentious impeachment saga.
The unfolding situation, characterized by conflicting statements and heightened speculation, has cast the Deputy President’s future into sharp relief.
In a dramatic twist, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge has strongly denied any plans to impeach Gachagua.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Mathenge dismissed the reports as mere fabrications. “The impeachment motion only exists in the minds of the Deputy President and his supporters,” he asserted.
According to Mathenge, no MP has approached him with intentions to endorse or support an impeachment motion against Gachagua.
Mathenge’s statement stands in stark contrast to public reports suggesting that a secret meeting of 21 MPs and a cabinet nominee from Gachagua’s region took place last month.
This alleged meeting reportedly discussed strategies to oust Gachagua from office. Mathenge’s remarks appear to directly refute these claims, painting the situation as a product of Gachagua’s imagination rather than a legitimate political threat.
However, this denial has not been unanimously echoed. Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu, appearing on the same panel as Mathenge, contradicted his colleague’s position.
Mulu acknowledged the existence of serious impeachment efforts against Gachagua, despite not being personally approached to endorse any motion. “What is happening is that the Deputy President needs to prepare himself,” Mulu said. He added, “There are serious moves, and the numbers are close. The situation is tense and requires serious consideration.”

Gachagua himself has been vocal about the turmoil surrounding him. In an interview with vernacular stations at his official residence in Karen, Gachagua shared his concerns about a potential conspiracy against him.
He recounted reports of a meeting involving 21 MPs at the home of a cabinet secretary from the Mt Kenya region. According to Gachagua, the cabinet secretary allegedly informed the MPs of President William Ruto’s dissatisfaction with him.
The Deputy President’s comments reveal a complex web of political intrigue. Gachagua suggested that his adversaries might leverage opposition leader Raila Odinga’s newfound influence in government to garner the necessary support for his impeachment.
Despite his defiant stance, Gachagua admitted he lacks the financial resources to bribe MPs to protect his position. “If my mistakes are to defend my people, I’m guilty. I don’t have the money to bribe the MPs. I will pack my luggage and leave,” he stated resolutely.
Gachagua also expressed dismay at the notion that the impeachment plot is being driven by leaders from his own Mt Kenya region. He urged his detractors to seek the support of the electorate rather than MPs, emphasizing that his mandate came from the people, not the political elite.
“If there is that motion, they should first go back to their electorate and explain to the people who voted for me. It is Kenyans, especially the Mt Kenya people, who supported me and Ruto overwhelmingly,” Gachagua asserted.
