Justice and Equity Council UK Pledges Support for August ‘Nane Nane’ Demos, Highlights Areas for Govt Action

The Justice and Equity Council UK has expressed its backing for the protests scheduled on August 8, which are aimed at opposing specific developments within the country.

The Justice and Equity Council UK has raised concerns about the president and National Assembly’s effectiveness in making national appointments.

The council has criticized President William Ruto and the National Assembly for their perceived incompetence, particularly after the enactment of certain laws that were deemed unconstitutional.

“Parliament and President Ruto have failed to address the issues from June 25, 2024. The public demands a government of integrity, competence, and merit. We urge President Ruto to resign and establish a caretaker government with a timetable for fresh elections by August 2025.”

“Kenyans should peacefully protest from August 8, 2024, until this administration steps down and new elections are held. Security forces should not use their weapons against fellow citizens,” the council told Gossipa2z.com.

What did Kenyans demand from the June 25 protests?

The statement indicates that Kenyans did not request President Ruto to establish a broad-based government. Instead, they sought appointments that accurately represent Kenya’s diversity.

“Kenyans have not asked Ruto to unconstitutionally cannibalize the opposition parties and compromise their oversight duty. They did not ask for a broad-based government or a government of national unity and its many mongrel substitutes. Kenyans asked that all appointments to state and public institutions must reflect the face of Kenya. Ruto has not done this as 90% of state corporations are still being run by members of a particular ethnic group,” they claimed.

Why does the Justice and Equity Council support demos?

As per the council, Kenyans are “fed up with Rutoโ€™s shifting policies affecting their lives and the colonial-era tactic of divide and rule, which ended on June 25, 2024, should not be revived”.

Further, the body indicated that the president has lost legitimacy and is desperately trying to hold on.

“To address these issues, we will join Kenyans from all walks of life at the “nane nane” rally on August 8, 2024,” they said.

The body contended that the National Assembly has not adequately addressed executive overreach or held the government accountable, leading to a call for a Judicial Review regarding the Director of Public Prosecutionโ€™s management of corruption cases since 2022.

Furthermore, it called on the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to examine the assets of nominated Cabinet secretaries and confirm they have fulfilled their tax obligations.

“We are further concerned that despite unconstitutional appointments and graft allegations, the National Assembly has approved controversial Cabinet nominees. The reappointment of Kithure Kindiki, linked to police brutality and lack of accountability, is unacceptable and suggests a disregard for Chapter 6 of the 2010 Constitution,” the statement added.

Miguna shares Sudi’s phone number online

In other updates, lawyer Miguna Miguna clashed with Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi regarding their opinions on the upcoming demonstrations.

The dispute intensified when Miguna accused Sudi of amassing wealth through corrupt means due to his public office position.

Even after Sudiโ€™s apparent “confession,” Miguna openly revealed his phone number, inviting Gen Zs to “reach out” to him.

What else you need to know about anti-government protests

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has directed a crackdown on anti-government protests in Karatina, Nyeri.

Two MPs who support Gachagua and were detained in connection with the demonstrations have voiced their objections after being interrogated for 48 hours.

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi criticized Miguna Miguna for his backing of the anti-government protests.
