Opiyo Wandayi Denies Benefitting from Gen Z Protests Through Applying for CS Position
James Wandayi, nominated for the position of Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary, rejected claims on Saturday that he had used the Gen Z protests’ aftermath to seek this strategic role.
During his appearance before the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments, Wandayi made it clear that he did not seek the cabinet position himself but was put forward by someone else.
The former National Assembly Minority Leader emphasized that despite his cabinet nomination, he continued to support the concerns of the anti-government protesters.
Wandayi highlighted the importance of addressing the issues raised by the youth, which he believed required immediate government action.
He pointed out that the protesters’ concerns were similar to issues previously discussed in the National Assembly.

“The concerns raised by the youth were not new; they were relevant issues that needed attention,” Wandayi explained.
He added, “It is incorrect to say we exploited the Gen Z movement. I did not seek to join the executive but was honored to be recommended.”
Wandayi praised the President for the cabinet nomination, noting the need for balance in government appointments.
He assured the committee that his appointment did not signify a betrayal of the youth but rather represented a shift in perspective given the current times.
Wandayi was one of four Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials nominated for cabinet positions by President William Ruto, alongside John Mbadi (Treasury), Hassan Joho (Mining), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives).
Following his cabinet nomination, Wandayi announced his resignation from parliament, leading to upcoming elections.
