President Ruto Breaks Silence On UDA Party Wrangles
President William Ruto has called on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party members to end internal conflicts and focus on uniting Kenyans.
Addressing a crowd in Tiaty, Baringo County on Friday, Ruto emphasized the importance of collaboration among Kenyans and highlighted his efforts to form a diverse government aimed at advancing the country.
He remarked, “Even within our UDA party, Kenya Kwanza, I urge you to cease the quarrels and competition. Let’s work to unite all Kenyans.”
Ruto stressed that this is the time for all Kenyan leaders to come together for the collective good.
He asserted that if there is unity, issues like unemployment and corruption could be resolved.
Party disputes erupted on Tuesday when lawyer Joe Khalende arrived at the UDA party headquarters, asserting his takeover as the secretary general.
Khalende also accused the ousted Secretary General Cleophas Malala of neglecting his responsibilities.
“He opposes the formation of a broad-based government, and I am here to confirm that he is no longer the UDA secretary general. I, Joe Khalende, will assume the role,” Khalende declared.

“Moving forward, the UDA party will refocus on its members. It was created as a people-centered party, not centered around individuals.”
However, Chairperson Mbarire rejected Khalende’s claims, stating that UDA operates under established structures.
Earlier on Friday, the UDA party’s National Executive Committee revoked Cleophas Malala’s appointment as Secretary General, appointing former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar in his place.
“Following thorough discussions and by Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has decided to appoint Vice-Chairperson Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan as the interim Secretary-General,” the statement noted.
The meeting was led by party chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.
Malala had been serving as acting UDA Secretary-General since February 2023, following the departure of Veronica Maina, who was appointed to the Senate.
