Drama as UDA Members Push for Removal of Cleophas Malala as Secretary-General

Certain United Democratic Alliance (UDA) members are advocating for the ouster of Cleophas Malala from his role as Secretary-General.

Spearheaded by Lawyer Joe Khalende, this faction, identifying as ‘founding members of UDA,’ accuses Malala of hindering the party’s advancement and the Broad-Based Government established by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Lawyer Khalende declared himself the new acting Secretary-General and announced that Malala is prohibited from performing any duties for the ruling party.

Khalende also alleged that the former Kakamega Senator is acting as an agent for UDA’s adversaries to weaken the party’s growth.

“Malala has neglected his responsibilities as the SG of the ruling party. The SG’s essential role is to be the party’s spokesperson, organizing and initiating meetings on its behalf. It’s evident that Malala has allied with our opponents, supporting the TAWE movement and agendas that conflict with the ruling party,” stated Khalende.

“He has opposed our party leader and the formation of a broad-based government. I, Joe Khalende, will now assume the role of SG for the UDA party.”

The members contend that Malala has not effectively managed party operations and grassroots elections, which have often been chaotic and subject to court interventions.

They claimed that all UDA entities have been informed of the removal process, which has been underway for several months.

“The effort to remove the problematic individual has been in motion within the party. All party organs are aware and in agreement. We issued a show-cause letter to Malala, but he obstructed the process. Despite the party’s extensive grassroots recruitment and elections, he has hindered the process,” stated Khalende.

The group pledged their support for the new broad-based government, emphasizing their commitment to pushing for grassroots elections and attracting new ODM members through the new partnership formed under the broad-based government.

“Moving forward, grassroots elections will proceed as scheduled, with continued recruitment and rebranding. This presents an excellent opportunity for UDA members to extend a welcoming hand to our ODM counterparts and collaborate in government to improve the lives of Kenyans under the leadership of Ruto and Raila,” he said.
